Before embarking on The Longest Journey , check your preconceived notions of reality at the door. While this may play like a traditional adventure game, the story is anything but conventional. As art student April Ryan you'll soon discover you have the ability to bridge two worlds--the 23rd-century, science-oriented Earth that you live in, and its counterpart, Arcadia, where magic is reality and technology is the stuff of legends. Telling you more than that would spoil the story, but suffice it to say that your ability to cross between the two worlds must be used to save both. The game spans four CDs and needs all that space to hold both the gorgeous graphics and hours of high-quality speech. Everyone you meet has plenty to say, and you'll want to listen to everything because the game contains some of the most brilliant voice acting ever recorded. Each character has such a distinct and engaging voice that you could play this game with your eyes closed and it would maintain much of its beauty, alt

Double-clicking will make April run. This is sure to save you a lot of time when you're traveling between places. You can also press ESC to skip animations altogether to save even more time. It takes a long time to open and close the list of items all the time. Use the A and S button to switch items -- it goes a lot faster, especially when you don't know what to do with what you have and you want to try combining random items. Check if you have discovered all the exits in a scene by pressing the X button. Press it again to return the screen to normal. The game can be inconsistent about how you give items to characters. Sometimes, you have to talk to them in order to give them the objects. Other times, you have to use the objects with them. There are even times you have to talk to them, then give them the objects. If you think you need to give an object to a character but the game won't let you do so, try all of these possibilities. If you get stuck, make sure you've found all the scenes (by pressing X) and that you've noticed all the objects. Look at all the stuff you have - - sometimes what you need is right in your pocket. (It is amazing what April can keep in there, isn't it?) Go around and talk to people, even if you have talked to them not too long ago. Something may have happened to you or to them, and maybe they've got something to say to you, or maybe you can ask them something new and get valuable clues. And if none of these things work, read the hints in this file! :) Also, a nice thing to do if you're stuck and you don't want to read any of the hints in this file (as if... :)), or if you can't get any information out of the hints, is to take a look in April's diary. You may have forgotten some important information. The same goes for the dialogue journal. Someone may have said something important.
