There are 4 different types of staff:

- Handyman
- Mechanic
- Entertainer
- Guard

When managing the handyman, I suggest you set an area for them to clean in, otherwise they tend to flock towards the right had side of the park. Also, handymen are more needed around the food and drink stands, you don't need them at all around the rides unless there is a possibility of the guests being sick.
Mechanics are quite a tricky subject. If you have employed mechanics, you will notice then when a ride starts smoking, a mechanic from the other side of the park is called, rather than the one sitting next to it, eating his lunch. The best way to solve this is to try and keep your park as compact as possible, and employ more mechanics than you actually need. This can end up being costly, however it will prevent your rides blowing up.
Entertainers are helpful in your park. They will boost your reputation. If you notice, more people will come if you have entertainers, therefore more money. I recommend hiring one of each type and that's all you need.
Guards are totally pointless. They are the highest wage earner yet they do nothing except stand there and turn 90 degress every few seconds. No spies or anything like that will come to your park and if you look at your guard regularly you'll see that he does nothing to anyone.
