Introduction # This FAQ is meant to be a no-frills, no-gimmicks, as-spoiler-free-as-possible walkthrough, which should only appear at: www.gamefaqs.com I suggest that you look to other FAQs for gameplay info beyond the walkthrough. Be warned, however, that the stage, song and character names may be slight spoilers, but otherwise, little to no info about the game is revealed. Otherwise, enjoy! # 2. Gameplay and Controls # * 2.1. How to Play* Like in the first PaRappa game and Um Jammer Lammy, you must live vicariously as a cool rap star. You must push the buttons correctly in order to rap like the game's main protagonist Parappa. In each stage, a teacher will show you example lyrics for each rap song, and you must answer with your own lyrics. So basically, the game goes like this: Teacher's example -> your rap -> Teacher's example -> your rap -> etc. So basically, you must get with the rhythm and push the correct buttons in order to advance. The buttons on your PlayStation 2 controller are your controls that will function as follows: Directional Pad: Select options Left Analog Stick: Hold left or right to make Parappa repeat the first lyric of his rap. Useful for freestyling. Start Button: Give up the rap Rap Buttons - A = Triangle O = Circle X = Cross = Square L = L1 Button R = R1 Button * 2.2. Tips and Tricks * - In this game, you must watch the rhythm bar interface box at the top of the screen. Inside the box, there are two rhythm bars, and each one has a same set of button preparations. The top rhythm bar will display as the teacher's rhythm bar, and the bottom rhythm bar will display as Parappa's rhythm bar. This means that the teacher's face icon will move across the top rhythm bar, after which Parappa's face icon will move across the bottom rhythm bar, while the top rhythm bar changes to the next button sequence, indicating that it will be the teacher's next line to rap once Parappa finishes with the bottom rhythm bar. To distinguish that from the top, when Parappa's face goes over a button icon at the bottom rhythm bar, it will be time to press that button. You must do it in the correct order if you want to advance. - Another thing that is new to the PaRappa genre is the lyrics pushback. If you mess up twice and the Performance Meter drops to Bad or Awful Mode, the teacher will say, "Getting worse," and push the rap song back two lines, sometimes altering the lyrics to make them much easier to play. If you play correctly on these easier lyrics twice, the Performance Meter will go back up one mode, and the teacher will say, "Getting better!" before the lyrics return to normal. This is extremely helpful, and could especially be a lifesaver if you mess up twice on the last two song lyrics of the final lesson and the meter drops to Bad Mode, in which case the teacher will give you a second chance that could save you from Game Over. However, don't end the rap song on a bad note, because if you finish the rap song on Bad or Awful Mode or the Performance Meter dips below Awful, the game is over and you have to start the whole rap all over again. - Yet another thing that is new to the genre is the "freestyling meters" (shown as boomboxes) at the bottom of the screen below the subtitle box. These meters will rank your play in three different ways, yet they will only be fully active once you finish the game on Red Difficulty Level 1. Each meter will bear the faces of two teachers, both representing upper and lower bounds, yet these two faces won't appear until you have cleared each appropriate teacher's stage, and each meter won't fully function until both faces appear on it. The freestyling meters appear as follows: Blue Meter: Adherence to the given sequence. Low Position - Beard Burger Master High Position - Colonel Noodle Yellow Meter: Level of the original material you included. Low Position - Chop Chop Master Onion High Position - Hairdresser Octopus Purple Meter: Quality and energy of your rapping. Low Position - Guru Ant High Position - Instructor Moosesha - Finally, there are four difficulty levels depending on Parappa's hat color, which tells you what level you're currently playing, and the crown color on each teacher's icon, which tells you what level you are currently playing the game at: Difficulty Level 1: Red Difficulty Level 2: Blue Difficulty Level 3: Pink Difficulty Level 4: Yellow To advance to the next difficulty level, you must complete all eight stages of the game in the current level (the lyrics will slightly change depending on which level's stage you are playing the game at, and sometimes they may be random). Once you have completed the Yellow Difficulty Level 4 on all stages, you can change Parappa's hat color to whatever you like. Bear in mind, however, that the difficulty level does not change, so be careful. - Like in any difficulty level, let me quote Ryouga in doing one thing clear: The ultimate goal for each Stage is to jam really well and reach the fabled "COOL" Rating. But you can't be that cool by just following the Teacher's examples all the time. You've gotta freestyle your playing while following the beat. The easiest way to freestyle is to press a button multiple times more than needed, while following the beat. It's kind of hard to explain, so here are some examples: (Example 1: Basic Freestyling) Let's say something like this comes up on the Rhythm Bar: O - - - O - - - O - O - O - O - You could try something like this: O O O - O O O - O O O O O O O O See? All you have to do is follow the song's beat and press the button along with it. DON'T just jam the buttons randomly at any pace or you're to drop to AWFUL in no time. Get it? Got it? Good! (Example 2: Squeezing In More Notes) Here's something a little more complex: A - O - - - X - - - And here's some freestyling that could take its place: A A A - O O O X X - Unlike in PaRappa 1 or UJL, since there are two rhythm bars in the interface box, and the teacher goes through the top rhythm bar, you can't play before Parappa's face icon goes over the bottom rhythm bar for a higher score, making it more difficult to squeeze in more notes. I'm not sure about it, but I'm quite positive. But anyway... (Example 3: Less Can Be More) Okay, sometimes lines with huge amounts of notes that can be tricky to play at a decent pace. These kind of lines are just BEGGING to be freestyled. Take a look at this line: A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A Now pressing the A Button that quickly for that long can throw off your timing or wear you out. Instead of trying to hit EVERY beat there, try leaving some out, like this: A - A - A - A - A - A - A A A A Now the freestyled verse not only gives you more time to think between beat and lets you hit them more dead-on, it scores you more points for originality! Now that I've given you some tips and tricks, it's time for the... # 3. Walkthrough # This is where the stage begins, so keep in mind that as you advance through each difficulty level, the lyrics can change randomly and words will increase and repeat more randomly in each lyric, which can give you a bit of a challenge. Fortunately, the lyrics that will always remain the same before the next three difficulty levels are the ones in Red Difficulty Level 1, so I'll only do the lyrics in each stage in this difficulty level (I might try other difficulty levels later). So here's my terminology on the song lyrics: [(Additional Lyrics)]: Lyrics said by a teacher that are not in the subtitle box. Example: "Toast the buns. [My buns are very toasty.]" ([Parappa's Lyric]): Lyrics in parentheses rapped by Parappa, who must follow the teacher's rap. Notice that there are words that cannot be repeated, but there are the beats of the words that will be similar, especially in the final two stages. [(US)/(JAP/PAL)]: One song word/phrase in the U.S. version which is different from the other song word/phrase in Japan's and PAL's versions, which will be used occasionally in Stages 1, 3, and 6. Example: "We cook the best! [You better get in line./Taste better than wine.]" means that in the U.S. version it's "We cook the best! You better get in line." while in the Japan/PAL version it's "We cook the best! Taste better than wine." With all of that said, let's move on to... * 3.1.
